The idea came to me one day when I was on the way home from a ride to Carrizo Plain National Monument west of Bakersfield. It had been something in the back of my mind for years and I never did anything about it. I had thought all along to have a route that went up California. But then the idea of a road up the California, Oregon, and Washington came up. I had hiked the Pacific Crest trail back in the 1970s, why not call it the Pacific Crest Motorcycle Road, and have it follow, as closely as possible, the crest of the Sierras and the Cascades.
